В канун майских праздников в Общество изучения Амурского края пришел подарок из США. Прислала его Патриция Полански, библиограф Гавайского университета из Гонолулу, которая с 1991 года является членом ОИАК и поддерживает постоянные связи с библиотекой общества, информирует «Тихоокеанская Россия».
Патриция передала в дар обществу литографию «Памятник капитану Берингу на Камчатке». Её сюжет относится к пребыванию в Петропавловске в сентябре 1837 года экипажа французского фрегата «Венера», совершавшего кругосветное путешествие.
По свидетельству автора, члены экипажа встречались с местными властями, гуляли по городу и даже участвовали в медвежьей охоте. На литографии, подаренной Патрицией, моряки изображены у памятника Витусу Берингу в городском саду Петропавловска.
Официально задачей экспедиции было изучение китобойного промысла в Тихом океане. Фактически же она осуществляла сбор информации, представляющей интерес для французской торговли и дипломатии.
Возглавлял экспедицию Абель-Обер Дюпти-Туар (Abel Aubert Du Petit-Thouars), представитель известной морской династии. По окончании похода он написал книгу «Кругосветное путешествие на фрегате «Венера» (Voyage autour du monde sur la frégate la Venus), изданную в Париже в 1841 году.
Отдельным томом был выпущен иллюстрированный атлас (Dupetit-Thouars, Abel Aubert. Voyage Autour du Monde sur la Fregate la Venus pendant les annees 1836-1839. Paris: Gide, 1840-1843). Он содержал великолепные карты и многочисленные рисунки, сделанные мичманом Массло (Masselot).
О пребывании «Венеры» на Камчатке в атласе всего пять (в некоторых источниках – шесть) рисунков. Подаренная литография сделана с одного из них.
