Самый крупный в Долине гейзеров по выбросу воды гейзер Грот неожиданно порадовал посетивших после рабочего дня смотровую площадку перед гейзерным ансамблем Витраж госинспекторов заповедника и волонтёров. По словам очевидцев, извержение Грота — грандиозное зрелище, информирует «Тихоокеанская Россия», ТоРосс.
Вот что пишет о Гроте в монографии «Каталог гейзеров Кроноцкого заповедника» её автор Андрей Леонов: «Грот – возможно, самый мистический гейзер Долины. Выход его расположен на уступе Витража справа, в небольшой пещере, окутанной клубами пара. Рассказы о его извержениях долго считались выдумкой, пока несколько таких извержений не были сфотографированы и сняты на видео в 1991 году. С тех пор многим людям удавалось увидеть их, и Грот общепризнан как гейзер с очень редкими, непериодическими извержениями».
По словам Леонова и других очевидцев, извержение Грота — грандиозное зрелище. Наклонная, почти горизонтальная струя кипящей воды с рёвом бьёт из пещеры поперёк всего Витража, размывая глину и гейзерит на его противоположном крае. Длина струи оценивается в 65 метров, объём извержения – в несколько десятков кубометров, что делает Грот самым крупным гейзером Долины. Правда, увидеть его извержение удаётся лишь редким счастливчикам. Интересной особенностью Грота является то, что он может извергаться сериями до семи раз подряд с перерывами 2–3 минуты, каждое извержение при этом длится 20–30 секунд.
Большую часть времени активность Грота проявляется в форме периодического излива, что и дало основания первооткрывательнице долины реки Гейзерной Татьяне Устиновой отнести горячий источник к гейзерам, хотя она и не видела его «настоящих» извержений. Мощный поток кипящей воды время от времени скатывается по склону каскадом небольших водопадов. За долгие годы в правой части Витража сформировалось своеобразное русло («слив Грота»), которое хорошо видно издалека благодаря своему светло-жёлтому, песочному цвету.
